About Room 13

Scotland is known internationally as the home of Room 13 – now a global network of studios and even larger community of artists who recognise the need for a better standard of arts training and creativity at all levels of education.

What Age Can You Start Being an Artist?

Room 13 started out as a single room in Caol Primary School, near Fort William in the West Highlands of Scotland.

The room was used as an art studio where the students of the school could go to make artwork, research, read or discuss things with their Artist in Residence.

Most importantly it was their room, their space and as such was managed entirely by them.

Since the students of Caol Primary took the first initiative in 1994, Room 13 has grown slowly and organically to become a network of such studios worldwide and host to a growing international movement of young artists.

Together, these studios are collectively known as the Room 13 Studio Network.

Room 13 has gained an international reputation for good practice in the field of arts education. This is largely based on the well publicised work of our Primary School studios, where the combination of professional arts practice, philosophy and business management has been regarded as “ground-breaking” and “exceptional.”

In fact, our approach is rooted in some very traditional ideas and the outcomes are simply a result of adult and younger artists working together in an environment of mutual respect, open communication and creative equality.

Our achievements in this area are the result of genuine collaboration between adult artists and young people, motivated by ideas for an improved society.

Room 13

Room 13 aims to promote artistic & intellectual development, providing an exchange of ideas, skills and experience across all ages.

We operate a very strong ethos - at its heart is a belief in the importance of each individual’s creative integrity and the expression of that individuality as essential to the wealth and health of the wider community.

Room 13

Room 13 also has a part to play in promoting wider applications of creativity in education, training, business and any aspect of industry where creative thinking is necessary.

Young people, students, school leavers, educators, artists, corporate professionals and representatives of any creative or cultural industry are among the wider public who contribute to and benefit from working with Room 13.

Room 13

The Room 13 organisation is run by a dedicated team of artists, educators and creative thinkers of all ages and continues to be driven by the hard work and enthusiasm of the student management teams across the network.
