Room 13 Annual Report - April 2006 The Room 13 Annual Report for 2005, containing contributions from all our studios worldwide and details of all Room 13 activities was published in April 2006. Room 13 Visit to Aseema - October 2005 In October 2005 a group from Room 13 travelled to India, where we met up with an organisation called Aseema ( www.aseema.org ). Aseema works to protect the rights of underpriviledged children around Mumbai, particularly the right to education. We travelled to Mumbai from Delhi to meet the students and teachers of Aseema. We found that Aseema have a lot in common with Room 13. We had fun doing an art workshop with them, and sharing ideas about art and education. Aseema have recently made an animated film about child rights which has wonmany international awards. Room 13 Residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art - July 2005 From 4th - 17th July 2005 artists from Room 13 Caol, Lochyside and Hareclive and Lochaber High School took part in a residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. It was great! We enjoyed having access to our studio 24hours a day, meeting and working with other artists from around the world, exploring Dublin and having the freedom to concentrate on our art without having to worry about schoolwork. It was a good opportunity for us to meet and collaborate with artists from the other Room 13 studios as well. At the end of the residency we had an open studio exhibition to show what we had been working on during our stay at IMMA. We really enjoyed experience, thanks to Janice and the rest of the staff who were so helpful andthe other artists who were really good to us. How Old Do You Have to Be to Be an Artist? Conference 30th June 2005 This conference was billed as a national debate on the value and status of childrens art in the Uk and internationally. Room 13 was proud to take centre stage along with other keynote speakers such as Sir Nicholas Serota, Professor Jonathan Fineberg and Westminster's Minister for Culture, David Lammy MP. Room 13 in South Africa - April 2005 A team from Room 13 visited South Africa during the Easter holidays. We worked with TBWA/ in South Africa to set up Room 13 studios in 2 schools; Sapebuso Primary in Soweto, and Mmulakgoro Intermediate School in Botshabelo. We really enjoyed visiting both schools. We spent 2 days in each one getting to know everyone and talking about Room 13. We also spent some time in Johannesburg meeting business people who are interested in supporting Room 13 in South Africa. We are really excitied about the South African Room 13s and the way that Room 13 is developing internationally, especially now that we are working togehter with TBWA/. Art in Education - Stylus Publishing LLC - January 2005 Room 13 is featured in a new book called Art in Education; Social and Cultural Practice. It is a collection of texts written by different arts educators, edited by Dennis Atkinson and Paul Nash. It contains a conrtibution written by Danielle Souness and Rob Fairley of Room 13. Room 13 at IDEC - December 2004 In December 2004 a team from Room 13 travelled to Bhubaneshwar in India to attend our first IDEC conference. IDEC is organised by the International Democratic Education Network, and it is held each year on a different continent. More information about IDEN and its members can be on their website. We found the conference to be quite exciting and we learnt some very important things. We met loads of interesting people from all over the world - India, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, Germany and more! It was also a great chance to meet up with Parbati, who runs Room 13 in Nepal and we enjoyed spending time with all these people and talking about how Room 13 can find ways to work with them in the future. When we weren't working we enjoyed a brilliant trip across India - from Orissa to Delhi by train, stopping off in Varanasi. At the end of the trip we rewarded ourselves with a visit to the Taj Mahal! Room 13 Film shortlisted for Award - November 2004 Room 13's documentary "What Age can you Start being an Artist?" made last year by Rosie, Ami & Danielle who are now in High School was shortlisted for the Grierson Award 2004 in the catagory Best Documentary on the Arts. Rosie & Ami attended the award ceremony in London and although we didn't win the prize we were really excited to be nominated and we are very grateful to ZCZ and Emma Davies for allowing us to make the film. Room 13 Open Weeks for 2004/2005 We have had a very busy year with lots of visitors! Although it has been great to meet so many people and hear about other projects that we could work with, it has been getting quite hard to run the business and do our schoolwork and spend all the time we would like talking to visitors and showing them round the gallery. To make it easier for us next year we have decided to have open weeks throughout the year when visitors will be welcome to come and see our studio and school gallery. Artworks Awards - July 2004 We were delighted to win an Artworks award again this year, and on the first day of our summer holidays, some of us went to London to collect it. We won in the Working with Artists catagory and Lucy collected the award for her picture "Everything I Have Thought of in Eight Years." When we were at the awards ceremony we heard that our win was unusual because the artist Lucy had been working with was Danielle who is still in school herself! We had a great day in London - we loved the Spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois in Tate Modern and there was a really cool light installation in one of the galleries upstairs. We got to meet some other interesting artists and it was good to see the work from other schools as well. 'What Age Can You Start Being an Artist?' - January 2004 Thanks to everyone who got in touch after seeing our film on Channel 4! We couldn't believe the number of people who watched it and all the e-mails we got. We really really appreciate all the messages of support and we wish that we could start a Room 13 for everyone who wants one. (Actually we are working on an idea for an internet based version of Room 13 that would link up people from all over the world. It might take a while to get it set up but Claire & Danielle are working on it so watch this space!) Some of the people who got in touch told us about their own projects and ideas and it has opened up even more exciting opportunities for us. So with all that and everything that is happening in our studios we are busier than ever. But it is exciting and we can't wait to find out what will happen next! Room 13 Documentary for Channel 4 The documentary film we have made about Room 13 was finished in October when a group of us went down to Channel 4 studios in London to do the final edit. Our film "What Age Can You Start Being an Artist?" was screened on Friday 30th of January 2004. Room 13 Hareclive - November 2003 In November some of us went to visit Hareclive Primary School in Bristol. We were really really impressed by their school and the art studio they were beginning to set up so we asked if we could help. They were pleased (i think!) and we began to talk about all sorts of ways that we could work together. It was a very exciting day! Now we are proud to say that Hareclive have their own Room 13 studio. We really enjoyed working with Emma Davis who is a director - she taught us how to use the equipment and helped us put the film together. Now that we have the skills we have been asked to make other films so we have set up our own editing suite in the studio and are developing a new Room 13 film-making unit. Now that Emma has left none of the adults around the studio know anything about film-making - they think all the technical stuff looks really complicated! But we know what we are doing so we work it completely by ourselves although sometimes we still e-mail Emma for help. Children's Art Day and Artworks Awards - July 2003 When we entered the National Childrens Art Awards we didn't really expect to win anything, cos our work is so different that we didn't fit any of the catagories properly! We were delighted when we heard that Room 13 had been awarded Artworks awards in two out of the three catagories we entered. We won an award for Working with Artists and another for Working with Resources. The best part was that a group of us got to go to London to collect our awards! We had a brilliant day meeting lots of different people in the reception at Tate Modern. We got to see the Bridget Riley exhibition and went on the new Tate to Tate boat which was really cool. The pictures show our whole group in the turbine hall with Sir Nicholas Serota, and some of us on the bridge across the Thames. Some of our work was featured in the Sunday Times Culture Supplement, on July 13th 2003. Room 13 Lochyside - February 2003 Room 13 has just recently expanded into another school, opening what will hopefully be the first of many new Room 13 studios. Lochyside RC Primary school is just down the road, so we are lucky that we can easily share our artists in residence with them! So far the Lochyside studio is only open one day a week, but we are very excited to be working with them. Soon they will have their own space on our website so they can keep you up to date their with what's going on in their studio.
