The Room 13 Studio Network: Room 13 Lochyside

Room 13, Lochyside Primary School, Fort William

Room 13 is the art studio in our school. Room 13 isn’t your normal school art room. It is run by children, not adults.

We have a management team which includes a chairman to run the meetings,  a secretary who writes down the minutes at our meetings and types out letters that we need to send, and a treasurer who looks after the money. We have our own bank account for Room 13 Lochyside. When we need to pay out money we write cheques and sign them

We have two MDs which is what we call the Managing Director. They keep track of what’s going on in the studio and give reports to our head teacher, Miss Smith. We also have 4 Directors who help out and take charge of particular projects.

We raise money by selling things, like our own Room 13 magazine, and things we have bought. We take the school photos every year and we take on commissions.

In Room 13 we talk about philosophy a lot and this leads to a lot of debating about things.  You get freedom of speech and there is not any particular subject that you have to do, you can just do whatever you’re interested in. We have a small library of books in Room 13. The books are interesting and aren’t like any other books that you’d find in a normal school library.

A good thing about Room 13 is that it gives us and the other young people that are involved with it a lot of unusual opportunities.

Being part of the worldwide network of Room 13 is great! It has helped people in different schools learn more about different cultures and understand more about life in different parts of the world other than just reading about it in text books.

Room 13 Lochyside was established in 2002. Lochyside Primary became the first school to adopt Room 13 when the management team at Caol decided to expand the project to other schools in the Fort William area. Lochyside is now also the home of Room 13 HQ from where we run Room 13 International and offer support to the worldwide studio network.
