Room 13 Caol is a multimedia art studio specialising in the visual arts. Laura Kingswood has been our Artist in Residence since 2005.
Our Room 13 is the original Room 13. It started in 1994 when Tina Love and Jackie Cameron started a camera club. They earned money by taking the school photographs and, once they had enough, they were able to employ their first Artist in Residence, Rob Fairley. An empty, disused classroom was transformed into an art studio and Room 13 was born.
The studio has remained true to its roots and the tradition of taking the school photographs continues provide us with our main source of income. We also design, produce and sell our own Christmas cards.
Room 13 is open to everyone and there are many ways to get involved. Some simply come and paint or join in art club, whereas others commit wholeheartedly to the ethos of Room 13, using the studio at every opportunity.
There are a variety of roles available on the team from chairperson to cleaner, director to designer and press officer to paint monitor. The elected management team is made up of a managing director, chairperson, secretary, treasurer and directors. With the help of all the other supporting roles (or jobs), they make sure the studio runs smoothly. Management meetings are held regularly to discuss issues and events happening in the studio.
We have a gallery that runs throughout the school where we exhibit the best artworks created in Room 13. Older artworks from Room 13’s permanent collection are on public display at Lochaber College.
Artists from our studio have won many awards and exhibited widely, some have even shown at TATE Modern in London and Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. We take part in a wide variety of projects and take on commissions. Some projects we have taken part in include Operation Soapbox from the Southbank Gallery and the Unilever International Schools Art Project.
